I've known how to crochet since I was in single digits (8? or 9? years of age). My maternal grandmother taught me, and in fact, my first project was a sweater for her dog (shall I mention that she lives in humid Hawaii?). My daughter and I have matching scarves, and I've made my share of afghans, potholders etc. So I figured, if I can crochet, I can knit, right? Well, err.....I don't know about that!
Today my eager hands got hold of a hot copy of Stitch N' Bitch, and I read the opening chapters of the history of knitting with much agog. Entering into the heart of the book, I found it most difficult to train my crochet fingers to become knitting fingers. The "casting on" portion was fairly simple, but learning how to actually create stitches had me in complete frustration! Ugh! Is it me or should there be a hook on the end of the knitting needles? I mean how are you supposed to "grab" the yarn?! Where is that crochet hook when I need it?

Hi, good luck on the knitting. I only made the one swatch that you saw on my weblog but I plan on continuing until I get it perfect...but it was so frustrating at first. I think I can be calmer for the next attempt. Somebody (I can't remember who) told me about this site that has small video clips, maybe you can use that. It really helped me. http://www.stitchguide.com

That site Irah shared was the exact one I was going to leave. I saw it at Poundy (www.poundy.com) and her description of the videos as porn, is oddly accurate. I found myself feeling quite excited by the things they did to that yarn.
I could never learn to knit from a book. I've been knitting for 4 years now and I still can't tell a thing from a photograph of a knitting procedure.
Good luck!

Thank you ladies SO MUCH! I am going to check it out....that is as soon as my son let's go of my leg. . .and my daughter stops her fierce tantrum!

So far I know how to cast on and the knit stitch. I can't figure out the purl stitch or binding off so the potholder I'm making is going to be REALLY long.
